In the UK, the three main players in bid per click search engine advertising are Yahoo (formerly Overture), Miva (formerly known as Espotting) and Google's AdWords.
In very simplistic terms, you bid against other competing sites for placement when searches are performed for a specific keyword. For a search done on the term "widgets", your competitor 'World Wide Widgets' might have bid 21 pence per click and currently have first place. If you bid 22 pence, you would be placed above them until such a time as they increased their bid.
Whilst it is an extremely effective method for searchers and advertisers alike, it's not always the highest bidder who sees the most clicks. By having a well written listing, you may receive a higher click through rate (CTR) than higher placed sites paying more money.
It is possible to set maximum daily budgets and predict with some degree of accuracy the number of visitors that your budget will provide you with.
