Website Usability

Having arrived at your site, what makes people reach for the 'back' button?

There are any number of ways to drive visitors to your competitors site, the commonest is failing to understand the medium of the web - which your competition know only too well! Some of these common mistakes occur even on brand new websites.

  • Page slow to download.
  • 'Flash' graphics used inappropriately - 'Skip Intro..'.
  • Confusing or misleading site navigation.
  • Dead links, missing pages.
  • Outdated appearance.
  • Sites that only work in Internet Explorer.
  • If your user has a disability like a visual impairment, how accessible is your site to them?

Credibility Issues

Forgetting the web code and images on your site, there are other ways to have visitors reaching for the back button.

  • A site with a poor standard of english, having spelling and grammar mistakes rife throughout page copy, sends a bad first impression of your company.
  • Not having clear contact information, or policies on returns, refunds etc does little to promote confidence.
  • Many sites display their 'latest news' - which is all too frequently many months out of date. Is this company still in business?
  • For transactional websites, having paypal as your only method of accepting payment is fine for small sites, but consumers are a discerning bunch these days and view paypal more as a means of conducting business between private individuals - like an ebay auction.
